A great leapt forward from traditional farming, the development of Agricultural biotechnology has greatly improved the way consumer crops and domestic animals are handled. With the advances in DNA research, scientists developed a more practical way of improving agricultural traits through Agricultural Biotechnology. Traits like yield, disease and pest resistance/ tolerance, drought resistance/ tolerance, flavor enhancement, etc. can now be improved more rapidly and specifically using agricultural biotechnology compared to using conventional breeding.

Common activities inside an agricultural biotechnology lab involve PCR applications, molecular biology and chemical testing. Contamination and the workers' safety are of greatest concern and therefore require appropriate containment and safety equipment.
