A laboratory fume hood is a type of local exhaust ventilation system which primarily functions to provide operator safety against toxic vapors, gases and aerosols. All laboratory hoods work on a basic principle of containment. Negative pressure relative to the exterior is maintained within the hood to prevent toxic vapors from escaping as air is drawn, by means of an extract blower, at a consistent rate into the hood opening. The air that enters the hood, together with the toxic fumes are then released outside laboratory premises through ductworks.
